About The Rutherford Football Club
Rutherford Football Club was established in 1967 in the growing Hunter Valley suburb of Rutherford, just west of Maitland. What began as a small local community football club with a single registered team has grown into one of the region’s larger grassroots football organisations.
By 2017, the club was celebrating its 50th anniversary, having expanded from that original team into a club with more than 40 teams and hundreds of registered players across junior and senior football. The growth reflected the rapid expansion of Rutherford and the wider Maitland area over several decades.
The club has long been associated with community football in the Hunter Valley and competes within the Northern NSW Football and Hunter Valley Football systems. Its home ground is Norm Chapman Oval at the corner of Dunkley Street and the New England Highway in Rutherford.
Over the years, Rutherford FC developed a reputation as a strong family-oriented club focused on junior development, local participation, and community involvement rather than elite-level competition. Like many long-standing regional football clubs in Australia, the club’s importance has been as much social as sporting — providing opportunities for children, teenagers, and adults in the Maitland district to participate in football for generations.
The club’s growth mirrors the transformation of Rutherford itself. Once a relatively small outer suburb, Rutherford expanded rapidly through the late 20th and early 21st centuries into one of Maitland’s largest residential areas. As the suburb grew, so did participation in local football.
Today, Rutherford Football Club remains an important part of the local sporting landscape in the Hunter Valley, continuing a history that now stretches back nearly 60 years. The club regularly fields numerous junior and senior teams and maintains a strong connection to the local community through volunteers, families, sponsors, and long-time supporters.
